Who We Are

The first assembly of the Sudanese Meteorological Society (SUMS) was held on the 15th of October 2003 in the presence of the representative of Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC).
The discussion was fruitful and the founding members managed to approve the constitution of the Society to be effective as from 15th October 2003.


Vision

The development of the concepts of weather, climate and related sciences and applications for the benefit of everyone.


Objectives

The objectives addressed in the constitution to outline the activities of the Society are highlighted as below:

  1. Improve perceptions and awareness.
  2. Upgrade professional standards.
  3. Promoting specialization in the science of meteorology
  4. Raise the quality of scientific research and publishing.
  5. Recognition of creativity and excellence.
  6. Promote policies based on evidence and scientific experiments.

Activities

1. Encourage the scientific research in meteorology and related sciences and their applications.
2. Organize seminars, workshops and studies in collaboration with the local, national and international societies and institutions similar to SUMS.
3. Initiation and contribution in the formulation of projects in the fields of economic development, humanitarian and environmental activities that lead to deep understanding of meteorology and related sciences and their applications.
4. Issuing journals to extend the knowledge in the fields of meteorology and related sciences and their applications.
5. Support the national libraries with meteorological knowledge and related sciences and their applications.


Strategic plan Guidelines

SUMS’s strategic plan developed on four pillars that reflect its vision for implementation its objects and achievement of its goals:

  •  First pillar: Create and enhance relations among the Meteorological Societies on national, regional and international level and with those that share the same interests and objectives.
  • The second pillar: qualitative and quantitate representation of SUMS in the national, regional and international activates (workshops, forums, seminars and conferences) which support its activities and objectives
  • Collaboration and coordination with the Meteorological societies to organize the similar activities on the national, regional and international level.
  •   Reflect SUMS’s home activities worldwide through the proper media and through the smart partnerships and MoUs with the interest parties.

History

  • 2003 – The Sudanese Meteorological Society- SUMS was established
  • 2003 – Dr. Ahemd Osamn Babikir became the first President of SUMS
  • 2006 – Scientific trip to Merawi.
  • 2007 – Seminar on rainfall variability (Khartoum).
  • 2008 – Professor’s Hussein Suliman Adam calls for free data for researchers
  • 2009 – Workshops on renewable energy (Khartoum)
  • 2009 – The first meeting for retired meteorologists (Omdurman).
  • 2010 – Workshop on water management (Wad Medani).
  • 2010 – Seminar on Desertification in Sudan (Khartoum and Wad medani).
  • 2010 – Scientific trip to Sinnar state.
  • 2010 – SUMS participated in the establishment of the Ethiopian Meteorological Society
  • 2010 – Scientific trip to Al Bajrawiya.
  • 2011 – The second meeting for the retired meteorologists (Khartoum).
  • 2011 – SUMS participated on the congress meeting of the Kenia Meteorological Society (Nairobi)
  • 2012 – SUMS joined the International Forum of Meteorological Societies (IFMS)
  • 2012 – Scientific trip to Port Sudan.
  • 2012 – SUMS started its meetings with University students (El Neilain, Bahri and Omdurman).
  • 2012 – Professor Stigter’s first visit (Khartoum, Wad Medani and Gedarif).
  • 2013 – Seminar on Crop Water Requirements (Wad Medani).
  • 2013 – SUMS started its monthly symposiums (Khartoum).
  • 2014 – Highlighting weather related indigenous knowledge (wad Medani).
  • 2015 – Scientific trip to Eriteria.
  • 2015 – Professor Stigter’s second visit (Khartoum, Wad Medani and Gedarif).
  • 2015 – Scientific trip to Rufaa and Hasahesa.
  • 2015 – Addressing decision makers on the importance of inclusion of meteorological issues in school curriculum.
  • 2016 – Scientific trip to Kassala.
  • 2016 – SUMS participated on the national technical committee on Weather Insurance Index (WII).
  • 2016 – Participation on the registration of the Sudan Climate Change Network.
  • 2017 – The first workshop on skills of writing scientific papers.
  • 2017 – The second workshop on skills of writing scientific papers.
